Death Valley looks like a place that shouldn’t still exist, and it changes every couple of miles. After a rainy morning on the rim, I left the extra lenses and jackets in the car and dropped into the canyon with no plan, only a map and enough sense not to get lost. Near the top of one ridge the loose rock gave way, I slid, and my camera hit the ground hard; I was sure it was gone. I climbed back up anyway, and at the top I looked back the way I had come and saw these bands of colored hills, like another planet. The camera, somehow, still worked.
