Great Sand Dunes National Park | Colorado

With the wind gusting to 35 miles an hour and my pack loaded with gear and water, I headed into the dunes. On sand, every three or four steps up is really one step forward. I had added an extra night to a trip meant for Rocky Mountain National Park and reached the dunes a few hours before sunset, aiming for the far western reaches, away from the crowds. There is no single hero shot out here; the wind, the light and the ridges never stop changing, and you work with what you’re given. This was one of the first frames I made on the way in.
