Just after my son was born, I flew out west for a four-day sprint, to disconnect, move slowly and look closely. Zion was the goal, but Death Valley is only a couple of hours from Las Vegas (albeit in the opposite direction), so I tacked on an extra day and went there first. After sunset at the dunes and an unexpected rain at Zabriskie Point the next morning, I climbed down into Golden Canyon looking for contrast and pattern, and found these cracks at my feet. It took a while, and some awkward maneuvering, to get the camera pointed the right way. This was the result.
