I was running through tall grass toward a better ledge when I came within inches of a rattlesnake. It rattled, I jumped back, and I took it as a sign to head back to the car. That’s when I looked up and saw the road running out ahead of me, straight toward the sky. The Badlands are vast enough to fall into and hard to photograph, and so often it’s the thing you least expect that stops you, if you give it time. This photo gave the show its name: every moment away takes effort, and it’s always a long road to get there.
