For our tenth anniversary, my wife planned the opposite of our usual trips, a few quiet days on Lake Atitlán doing nothing at all, and I found one night to break the rule. We rode for hours in the back of a pickup from Antigua, through pueblos, dusty mountain roads and rainforest, then climbed Acatenango to a base camp around 11,000 feet. At sunset we pushed on toward Fuego, one of the hardest hikes of our lives: up and down 1,500 feet of loose volcanic sand, twice, in the dark, as lightning struck and clouds swallowed the view. We couldn’t always see it, but we could hear it, eruption after eruption, close enough to keep our hearts pounding. The next day we hiked out, went to the lake and did nothing, just as planned.
