Low clouds were lifting off Swiftcurrent Lake, and the peak across the water was catching the first warm light, mirrored in water that barely moved. My best friend was getting married in Whitefish, and I finally had the kind of time Glacier deserves: five full days, and I took them gladly. But Many Glacier was closed for construction to everyone except shuttle-lottery riders, tour groups and hotel guests, and only the hotel would put me here at sunrise. For two months I checked every day for a room, and the moment one opened, I took it, even though we already had a place to stay outside the park. This was the next morning, on our way out: the light looked right, so I pulled over.
