On my first day, three groups of strangers on the Arethusa Cirque trail told me I had to see Moraine Lake, so I tore up my plan for day three and booked a 3 a.m. shuttle. I rode up through freezing cold and falling snow, jittery and half regretting it. At the trailhead, in the dark and in grizzly country, I nearly postponed the hike and waited for daylight, until another hiker told me he didn’t want to go up alone either, so we went together. It snowed the whole way and was knee-deep by Larch Valley, and coming back down, I finally saw the glacial water of Moraine Lake, crowds and all. They were right: it was worth it.
