My friend rode his bike from the valley floor all the way up to Glacier Point, and the plan was simple: an early dinner at the top, then sunset on Half Dome. There’s a small rock outcrop where I always set up my tripod, so we pulled up chairs, cracked a few beers and watched the sky go from blue to pink to purple to black. I’d seen Yosemite in fall before, but always in November, when the color is already on its way out; this time I went early, close to peak, while Glacier Point Road was still open. Leaving the park, I told someone I ran into that I’d made some of my favorite photographs ever. It turned out to be true.
